Drones
Drones, also known as multicopters, are unmanned, remote-controlled aircraft. They are generally used for the following purposes: Photography, leisure activities, surveying, transportation, scientific research, etc. The type and size of drones can vary greatly, ranging from small aircraft weighing just a few grams to those weighing several tons. The use of drones in Liechtenstein is governed by Swiss aviation law and Liechtenstein data protection law.
Further regulations
Within the pilot's field of vision, operation with video goggles and the like is permitted, provided that a second person monitors the flight and can intervene in the control of the aircraft at any time if necessary. This person must be at the same location as the pilot.
Automated flight (autonomous operation) within the pilot's field of vision is permitted, provided that the pilot can intervene in the controls at any time if necessary.
Anyone operating a drone or model aircraft weighing more than 250 grams must ensure liability cover of at least CHF 1 million for any damage. Proof of insurance must be issued to the pilot and must be carried when operating the drone.
Parts of the municipal area of Balzers (near the Rhine via the quarry to parts of Fläscher Riet) are located in a no-fly zone due to the proximity of the heliport and the Bad Ragaz airfield.
For a detailed view of all no-fly zones, please refer to the drone map of the Federal Office of Civil Aviation FOCA, which is also used in Liechtenstein.
The area 'Government building - Parliament - Vaduz Castle' is subject to a permanent no-fly zone for drones. The exact location of the no-fly zone can be viewed here.
Affected persons
If a person feels disturbed by a drone and would like to bring this to the attention of the National Police, the following information is helpful:
- Date, time and location of the drone
- Direction from where the drone came and where it finally flew to
- Approximate flight altitude (house height, etc.)
- If possible, take a photo of the drone immediately, this can be very helpful in the investigation
- Report the flight immediately to the National Police on +423 236 71 11
Responsibilities
In Liechtenstein, the Civil Aviation Division of the Office for Building Construction and Spatial Planning is responsible for general questions about drones, licensing procedures, etc. You are welcome to send your questions directly by e-mail .
Questions regarding data protection regulations, in particular the authorization requirement for video recordings, can be addressed directly to the Data Protection Office.
Reports against drone pilots can be made to the National Police.
