Back to School - "Keep Your Eyes Open — Children Can Surprise You"
On Monday (August 4, 2025), the State Police and the Commission for Accident Prevention (KfU) launched a new prevention campaign to ensure safety on the way to school. The goal of the campaign is to prevent accidents and raise awareness among all road users that children in traffic are often quick on their feet and do unpredictable things.
Summer vacation is slowly coming to an end. Starting August 18, approximately 4,600 kindergarteners and schoolchildren will be making their way to school four times a day. Extrapolated, this amounts to approximately 36,800 kilometers that all the children collectively travel each day. This requires increased vigilance from all road users. For children, the walk to school is not just a trip to school, but a daily adventure. There is much to discover, see, and experience. Children view the world from a different perspective and perceive our environment through different eyes. Whether alone or in groups, children are not primarily focused on traffic on their way to school; instead, they chat, sing, or play together. For this reason, drivers are urged to be attentive, think ahead, and pay extra attention to children. After all, children often react in unpredictable and surprising ways.
To avoid dangerous situations, it is important to always come to a complete stop before a crosswalk and not to signal to children to cross the street. However, drivers should remain vigilant and give a warning signal if a dangerous situation arises (e.g., if oncoming traffic does not stop). Only by working together can we prevent dangerous situations or even accidents.
